Squealing, grinding, soft pedal, vibration? Pads measured, rotors photographed, itemized estimate to your phone before any work. From $250.

Bay Area stop-and-go eats brake pads. At Beacon Auto Care in San Mateo, we measure pad thickness on every wheel, photograph the rotors, and quote before any work. Pad and rotor replacement, fluid flushes, caliper service, and ABS diagnostics. Every finding documented with a photo first.

See a real example below: an actual customer's brake findings from our 95-point inspection, photographed and priced before any work started.

Signs You Need Brake Repair

  • Squeaking or Grinding: A high-pitched squeal means low pads. Grinding means metal-on-metal.
  • Soft Brake Pedal: A "spongy" pedal points to fluid leaks or air in the lines.
  • Vibration: Shaking in the steering wheel often points to warped brake rotors.
  • Pulling to One Side or a Burning Smell: Usually a sticking or seized caliper: the brake stays partly clamped, dragging and overheating that wheel.
  • Brake Warning Light: A solid brake light on the dash usually means low fluid or a system fault. Get it checked before you drive further. A flashing light is different; see our ABS warning light page.

How we quote a brake job

We don't guess; we inspect. Using our Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI), we send photos of your brake pads and rotors directly to your phone, so you see exactly what we see before approving any work. Labor runs $169–$189/hour depending on the job, with parts and labor itemized separately so you can see exactly what each line costs. Most cars run disc brakes at all four wheels; some models still use rear drum brakes; we service both. Since we're under the car anyway, we'll also flag any other issues (fluid leaks, suspension wear, low oil) at no extra charge. Many customers pair brake service with an oil change in San Mateo the same day.

  • OEM-equivalent brake pads (Brembo, Akebono; ceramic or semi-metallic depending on car)
  • Full brake fluid health checks and flushes
  • Parking brake inspected and adjusted as part of every brake service
  • Itemized estimate before any work: bill matches the quote
  • 24-month / 24,000-mile warranty on parts and labor

2013 Hyundai Sonata: front pads at 1mm, contaminated fluid

This 2013 Hyundai Sonata came in for an oil change and brake check in July 2026. Our inspection found the front pads worn to 1mm of friction material (2mm is the legal minimum), the front rotors grooved and out of spec, both front calipers hard to retract, and the brake fluid contaminated with high moisture. Every finding was photographed and sent to the owner's phone before any repair was approved. Customer details removed from what's shown here; everything else is exactly what our technician documented.

Findings like these typically run $250–$850 depending on what's actually worn: pads alone, or pads and rotors together. Priced once we've measured yours, not estimated.

Specific Brake Services

Pick your symptom or service for pricing and process.

Brake Pad Replacement

Pads measured on a gauge before we touch anything. We replace when they're worn, not when it's convenient. From $250, parts and labor warrantied 24 months.

Rotor Replacement

Rotors measured for thickness against the minimum-thickness spec stamped on the rotor (MIN TH) and checked for runout (lateral wobble). Past spec or out of runout tolerance we replace, always in pairs across the axle; in spec we resurface. Both readings documented in your inspection report before any work. From $425 paired with pads.

Brake Fluid Flush

Brake fluid tested for moisture and copper before we flush. DOT 3 or DOT 4 depending on your car, every 30k miles for most cars, sooner for hybrids and Euros. Test strip reading documented in your inspection report. From $140.

Grinding Brakes

Grinding usually means metal on metal: pads gone, rotors taking damage every block you drive. Same-day diagnosis, photos of the wear, and a real call on what actually needs replacing. From $250.

Squealing Brakes

Squealing isn't always a wear indicator: could be glazed pads, hardware rattle, or moisture rust on a quiet morning. We diagnose first, then quote, never both at once. Free inspection.

Soft Brake Pedal

Soft or sinking pedal usually means air or a slow leak somewhere. We test the fluid, check every line and caliper, then verify the master cylinder before recommending the right fix. No charge to diagnose.

ABS Warning Light

ABS lights point at wheel speed sensors, the ABS module, or wiring. We read codes with live data on the road before quoting any sensor. From $99 diagnostic.

Common Questions About Brake Repair in San Mateo

Costs, timing, and what to expect when you bring your brakes in.

How long does a brake job take in San Mateo?

Most brake pad replacements run 1.5–3 hours. If we also need to replace rotors or service the calipers, expect 3–4 hours. We text you a precise estimate after the digital inspection, usually within 30 minutes of drop-off. Same-day service on most cars.

How much does brake repair cost in San Mateo?

Front pads + rotor replacement — that's one axle, the front pair — runs from $425 per axle on most makes, up to $850 on European/OEM. Doing both axles costs more than one. How much more depends on whether the rear pads alone are enough or the rear rotors need replacing too. European cars (BMW, Mercedes, Audi) typically run higher because OEM parts cost more. You'll see an itemized estimate with parts and labor on your phone before any work starts. No surprise line items at pickup.

Why are my brakes squeaking or grinding?

Squeaking usually means the wear indicator on the brake pad is touching the rotor. Pads are roughly 80% gone. Grinding means the pad is fully worn through and metal is hitting metal, which damages the rotor. Either way, get it looked at soon. We'll send you photos of exactly what's going on before quoting any work.

Do you work on European brake systems (BMW, Audi, Mercedes)?

Yes. We service brake systems on most European makes: BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Mini, Porsche. We use OEM-equivalent or genuine OEM pads and rotors depending on what you want. Same digital inspection, same 24-month warranty. See our BMW repair page for brand-specific brake and coding work.

How often should I replace my brake pads?

For most cars, brake pads last 30,000–70,000 miles depending on driving style and traffic. Bay Area stop-and-go shortens that range. We check pad thickness at every multi-point inspection (free with any service) so you know exactly where you stand. Most pads start around 10–12mm new, and we flag replacement near 3mm, before the wear reaches your rotor. Front pads usually wear 2–3× faster than the rears. The front brakes do most of the stopping, which is why front-only jobs are common.

Do you offer same-day brake service?

For most pad and rotor jobs on common makes, yes: drop off in the morning, pick up by close of business. European cars or special-order parts may need 1–2 days. We confirm timing after the inspection so you can plan around it.

Is it safe to drive with bad brakes?

Squeaking alone is usually safe for a short drive to get it checked. Grinding, a soft/sinking pedal, a solid brake warning light, or pulling hard to one side are not. Those mean reduced stopping power, and driving further risks damaging rotors, calipers, or the caliper mount, turning a smaller job into a bigger one. If you're not sure which category you're in, call us and describe it. We'll tell you straight whether it's safe to drive over or if you need a tow.

A real job from this shop

2013 Hyundai Sonata

San Mateo · July 2026

What they came in with
Booked in for an oil change and a front-and-rear brake check. A routine visit, the kind we see every day.
What the inspection found
The 95-point inspection flagged 16 concerns, every one photographed. On the brakes: the front calipers were hard to retract and the fluid was contaminated. Elsewhere: no oil registering on the dipstick, rear pads still healthy at 6mm, and the drive belt due by schedule.
What we did, once they approved it
Once the owner approved it: front pads, rotors and calipers, a brake fluid flush, two tyres, the drive belt, spark plugs, engine air and cabin filters, a coolant service, the valve cover gasket, and a full-synthetic oil change.
Worth knowing
About two and a half days start to finish — most of that waiting on a part to arrive, not wrench time. The rear pads measured healthy, so they were left alone.
