Pre-Purchase Inspection in San Mateo, CA
Buying a used car? 60+ point check, code scan, road test, CARFAX service history reviewed. Catch hidden problems before you hand over a check. From $149.
Step 0: Before You Bring It In
Pull the VIN History First
The CARFAX service history we pull at the shop (via our Tekmetric system) shows every service event a shop reported to CARFAX: oil changes, repairs, emissions inspections, mileage readings at each visit. What it does not show: accidents, title brands (salvage, flood, rebuilt, lemon buyback), total-loss events, or owner history.
Before you drive a used car 30 miles to us, pull the full vehicle history report yourself. $5–$15 instead of the $40 CARFAX retail price, and it catches the things that make a car a "do not buy at any price": a salvage title from a totaled wreck repainted clean, an odometer rolled back 40,000 miles, three previous owners all returning the car for the same problem.
We recommend VinCheckUp. They pull NMVTIS data (the federal title database), accident reports, and ownership chain. Run the VIN before you bring the car here. If the report shows red flags, you saved the trip and the $149 PPI fee. If it's clean, bring it in and we'll do the physical inspection. That's where the actual mechanical problems show up.
Beacon Auto Care may earn a small commission if you use the link above, at no extra cost to you. We only recommend tools we'd send a friend to. The $5–$15 you pay goes to the same place either way; we'd rather you spend it before the inspection than skip the step.
A used car is the second-largest purchase most people make. The seller wants to sell. The CarFax report is what they let you see. A 60-minute pre-purchase inspection is what tells you what's actually under the hood. Beacon Auto Care in San Mateo does the same digital inspection on PPI cars that we do on every customer's daily driver, with the full photo report delivered before you decide.
